SOME NOTES ON THE PEACOCK PATTERN

This glorious Peacock design was developed at Dartington Pottery in Devon, England, in 1987 by the pottery's head decorator Clare Woodhall in collaboration with Janice Tchalenko, famous for her work at the nearby Poole Pottery.

The pattern is based upon repeating Peacock tail feathers fashioned with sponges and slip trailers to create layer upon layer of toning rich green and blue glazes, highlighted with an old gold outline which gives the whole design a jewel-like effect.

The pottery is contemporary, but the design owes much to the Aesthetic and Art Nouveau Movements of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, and pieces from this range sit as well in rooms decorated in this period style as in contemporary settings.

The Peacock Pattern was always produced in very limited numbers because of the complexity and technical nature of its creation. It was only available to special order and only to existing customers and as such it is becoming increasingly sought-after since production ceased. It is one of the few contemporary designs which was purchased for display at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
